We chat with Danielle and Drew McTaggart about their new record Lonesome High, ChatGPT as a critic, songwriting as a couple, and more in our latest Rockstars In Cars series.
Dear Rouge is one of Canada’s hottest rock bands. Formed in 2012 by husband-and-wife duo Drew and Danielle McTaggart, the band quickly gained attention with their energetic sound, combining powerful vocals with synth-driven melodies and guitar riffs. They released their debut album, Black to Gold, in 2015, which featured hit singles like “I Heard I Had” and “Black to Gold.” Known for their dynamic live performances, Dear Rouge has received multiple awards, including a Juno Award for Breakthrough Group of the Year in 2016.
Off the heels of the raw, gritty Lonesome High record, Danielle and Drew McTaggart continue their run as a Canadian musical power couple. On two separate rides, we asked each of the rockstars on their takes on how this record is different from the last, including the story behind the name.
It turns out Lonesome High is not without its critics, as Danielle comments on a scathing review from none other than ChatGPT! We also talk about the unique story behind Slab City, the desert location where Dear Rouge filmed the music video behind their track “Garbage”.
While full of energy and drive, the latest album also dives into more personal themes of parenthood, ambition, recognition, and more. We chat to the couple about the themes behind tracks like “The Show”.
We talk to both stars on their artist influences from Blondie to Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Danielle also gets into some of the aesthetic choices behind the bold outfits she rocks in their stylish music videos.
