Make Musical Theatre Magic: Singing, Acting, & Dancing!
Our Musical Theatre Program is designed for students who want to experience the thrill of performing on a professional stage. With official Disney licensing, our program provides students with the opportunity to learn and perform a fully realized Disney musical production in the beautiful Cosmopolitan Music Hall at Cosmo Music, in Richmond Hill. Students will spend the first two sessions getting to know each other and working with the program director to assign roles based on internal auditions. The next twelve sessions will focus on learning lines, rehearsing, and dress rehearsals, leading to a final performance. Register today to be apart of our next musical theatre production!

Disney's Newsies JR.
Disney's Newsies JR. is a 60-minute version of the 2012 Broadway musical, based on the 1992 film. Inspired by the rousing true story of newsboys in turn-of-the-century New York City. Newsies JR. features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken and Jack Feldman and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein.
When powerful newspaper publishers raise prices at the newsboys' expense, the charismatic Jack Kelly rallies newsies from across the city to strike against the unfair conditions. Together, the newsies learn that they are stronger united and create a movement to fight for what's right.

The spectacular officially licensed musical, designed for middle school-aged performers, is based on the 2013 Disney film and the 2018 Broadway adaptation.
Do you want to build a snowman? You’ll love this fanciful and heartwarming stage adaptation of the top-grossing animated film of all time! Join Anna, Elsa, and all of your favourite characters as they embark on an epic, ice-filled journey of self-discovery, camaraderie, and the real meaning of true love. Dance technique: Our dance instructors will teach students basic steps, choreography, and movement for musical theatre. They will also help students develop their physical coordination and musicality.

Students will develop a well-rounded understanding of music which will enable them to collaborate effectively with instrumentalists in the future.

What is the Cosmo School of Music's Musical Theatre Program?

What is the cost of the program?
The program cost is $688, which can be paid in full to save 5%, or in four monthly installments of $172.
Is previous experience required to join the program?
No, previous experience is not required. The program is designed for students of all levels and abilities, and the program director will work with each student to assign roles based on internal auditions.
What does a typical musical theatre class look like? How are the classes structured?
The program will start with a warmup game then focus on one or two scenes each week, first learning the music at the piano, then learning the blocking/choreography. Students will know page numbers of the script and songs a week in advance announced at the end of each class and emailed to parents that night.
What are the program features and benefits?
The program features and benefits include officially licensed Disney performance material, custom-fitted costumes for each student, no fundraising required from parents, use of our professional facilities, and opportunities to develop vocal technique, music theory, sight-singing and ear training, stage presence and performance skills, dance technique, instrumental skills, and understanding of sound and lighting. The program also helps students develop valuable life skills such as confidence, communication, collaboration, and creativity.
What are the technical musical and general benefits of the program?
The program offers technical musical benefits such as developing proper breathing, intonation, articulation, and projection, learning basic music theory concepts such as rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, and dynamics, reading and interpreting musical notation, and identifying musical intervals, chords, and scales by ear. The program also offers general benefits such as developing stage presence and performance skills, physical coordination and musicality, and understanding the role of sound and lighting in a performance.
What is the program directors role?
The program director selects the show, teaches students the music, blocking, and choreography. They also lead all rehearsals, coordinate technical aspects of the show (costumes, sets, etc), and run the show backstage.
How are students assigned roles?
After working with students in the first lesson and doing a "mock audition" (where everyone who wants to sings a few lines from a song solo), the director will assign roles.
Do the students receive breaks during each class?
There will be one 10-15 minute break in each class. Students may also be able to take a break or review their lines/take notes during rehearsal when they are not on stage.
Are parents allowed to observe the classes/rehearsals?
Yes! As long as they do not distract the students or interrupt the class. They will also be invited to watch the dress rehearsal(s).
How else can parents support the production?
Once roles are assigned, parents should help their student highlight all of their lines/songs they'll be performing in, to help memorize and practice their lines/songs. All parents will be sent a digital copy of the script along with the rehearsal and performance tracks so they can help make sure their kids are practicing their roles effectively. The scenes/songs we will be working on each week will be emailed to parents the week before, so they can help make sure students are familiar with the song/scenes before the rehearsal.
We will also need some volunteers to help during the dress rehearsals or performance backstage with costumes and the like, so if any parents or older siblings want to volunteer, they can let the program director know.
