We want a guitar that can grow with you and your style of playing. We can change the parts on the guitar to evolve with you. You can change the electronics, the shape of the armrest to something more comfortable, it's your choice.

AVA Guitars

AVA Guitars at the NAMM 2022 Show

According to AVA, their guitars are a statement of independence and freedom for mature, self-confident, and successful music players. Made in Portugal with sophisticated design and icon shape, AVA is all about reinventing the archetype of guitars with by combining innovative technology and hand-craftsmanship.

From AVA:

We aim to create top-quality and high-performance electric guitars for guitars players to have the best experience from the moment they see them until the moment they put them back on the stand. It is about design and comfort, also about responsibility and sustainability while considering new materials, but, most of all, it is all about playing so well, with a beautiful response, with an impressive sustain, everything in a fraction of the weight you have in a heavy hardwood traditional guitar. AVA design is all about keeping the essentials to shine, maintaining an archetype but discretely revolving it from the inside, from custom PCB electronics to the custom-made knobs and tailpiece. These guitars are designed and built from scratch in the AVA studio in the creative city of Porto, Portugal, blending science, technology, and craftsmanship to achieve a very special product

AVA One - Red Coal

We wanted to do something in carbon fibre, and you realize that everything that was done in carbon fibre was not very well presented, looked like a cheap product. We wanted to do something really classy where we can show that if you work well on the material, you can do organic, you can do high end stuff, you just need to think well.
Joao Petiz, AVA Guitars

Basically we have a back part, a front part, they are glued but it's full carbon fibre. We have this woven textile, and then we have uni-directional carbon, and we mix it together to get the right stiffness and the right behaviour for each guitar.

Michihiro Matsuda was born and raised in Japan, before moving to the United States where he then studied at Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie, to then study with Ervin Somogyi. Identity, creativity, and tradition play a major role in Michi's guitar craftsmanship.

Matsuda makes some truly bold, innovative designs. You can't help but be struck by the artistry and daring nature of these pieces.

Matsuda No. 92 Deconstruction Series, First Prototype

It's got only an acoustic soundboard but no acoustic body. There are main two beams going through the body, that connects to the guitar neck and the tuner sections. The soundboard is not glued on, it fits right into the frame.
Michihro Matsuda, Matsuda Guitars
Matsuda No. 92 Deconstruction Series, First Prototype Guitar, at the NAMM 2022 Show

Key Specs:

  • Body: Double Top Construction - Spruce Face, Balsa Bottom, Nomex Honeycomb in Between
  • Neck: Tempered Maple
  • Fingerboard and Bridge: Wenge
  • Pickup: Bartolini
  • Tuners: Gotoh
  • Additional Features: Custom Soundboard, Beam Structure, Body Frames and Beams are Made of Mahogany, Maple, and Wenge

From Matsuda:

I developed the Deconstruction Ukulele idea for guitars. This basic structure is the same as the ukulele version. There is no sound box, just sound board only. It is fit in a complicated framework. Except for the player’s body and leg supporting section, all structure you see in this guitar is the framework, and they are necessary for supporting the top, neck, and tuner section at the bottom. The configuration is roughly the same as banjos. I do carving on some frames, and use figured wood. So, they don’t look like frames and braces.

Matsuda M1 No. 133A Mottainai

The guitar stand, this is an art piece I made for the show. It functions, everything functions. When you turn it on, it blows air into the guitar. You can add helium gas into it. With the helium gas, you can change your voice, so maybe you can change the guitar's voice? It's a joke piece, but it functions.
Michihro Matsuda, Matsuda Guitars

Key Specs:

  • Top: Two Pieces of Spruce
  • Back and Sides: Walnut, Maple, Cocobolo, Unknown Rosewood, Wenge, Asian Rosewood
  • Neck: Multiple Mahogany Cutoff Pieces
  • Fingerboard: Indian Ebony
  • Bridge: Wenge, Custom Carved
  • Additional Features: Custom Rosette

From Matsuda:

I try to save scrap woods and cut-off pieces in my shop. when I find them on my shop floor, I often say “Mottainai”. You may have heard this word, since Kenyan environmentalist Wangari Maathai who won Nobel peace prize use this word “Mottainai” in her speeches. This Japanese word simply means that “I may be able to find use for it, let’s keep it”. It is very common word in Japan, which people use it spontaneously in daily life. This Matsuda M1 No.133A is made of various cut-offs and left over woods which are accumulated in my shop. the neck is multiple layers of Mahogany cut-offs and veneers. Sides are constructed with six different wood species with inside layer. Top and back are not book matched, and made of different type of wood. So, I call Matsuda No.133A Mottainai.

Bacci Leonardo Funk Machine Baritone - Vintage White

I dubbed it the funk machine. I use baritone in a non-traditional context int hat I play a lot of funk and groove music on it. So for me, I needed a guitar that coincidentally had a lot of great low end but high end snap and just reacts really well to my fingers, in the sense that it's super dynamic and it's just funky. It's kind of like a big telecaster but its own thing.

The Gold Collection by Projects of Three

The Gold Collection at the Boutique Guitar Showcase at NAMM 2022

The Gold Collection is a standout conceptual collection, featuring three unique guitar makers, Adriano Sérgio, Michael Spalt, and Ulrich Teuffel. According to these luthiers, they are siren songs in the white noise of industrial guitars. The craft is meticulous, and each of these pieces are intended to push the boundaries of what an electric guitar can be.

From Tania Spalt, (manager of Projects of Three):

The Gold Collection is the 2022 edition of Projects of Three (Po3), a collaborative of renowned luthiers Adriano Sérgio, Michael Spalt and Ulrich Teuffel. Their mission with this project is to show in a flamboyant manner than a guitar can transcend the traditional forms and become a piece of art while still never losing its original purpose - to be a superb musical instrument to be played and enjoyed both visually as well as acoustically. For the 2022 NAMM Show returning from its forced hibernation Po3 decided to celebrate this resurgence with a collection using gold as their common theme. The result is again a stunning trio of guitars showing the versatile and varying approaches by the three luthiers to the same theme.

Auros - The Gold Collection

By Michael Spalt
Why gold? Because gold does not require any explanation.
Michael Spalt
Michael Spalt Auros Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

The holes in the body are inspired by Michael's attraction to how the glow gold creates when it reflects upon itself. They create pockets and surfaces where the light reflects back and forth, openings and curves that indicate the softness of the metal. An Indian Rosewood neck constitutes the core of the instrument, from the twisted headstock designed to maintain a straight string path while continuing the contour line of the neck to the string retainers anchoring the strings through the body. Mounted to this are ebony pillars which hold the bridge. A handmade polished aluminum frame holds the two highly carved body wings made of Cedro.

Key Specs:

  • Body: Cedro
  • Neck: Indian Rosewood
  • Fingerboard: Ebony
  • Finish: 24K Gold Leaf
  • Pickups: Custom P-90 Style, Covers are Fashioned of Fossil Mammoth Tooth Material

From Michael Spalt:

Auros represents the elemental state of gold in this collection. Like a nugget found on the bottom of a clear mountain stream the gold has been formed and shaped by its journey down the mountain. I was always attracted by the glow gold creates when it reflects upon itself. The holes in the body create pockets and surfaces where the light reflects back and forth, openings and curves that indicate the softness of the metal that has had such a fascination for humans since the beginning.

Açores Gold - The Gold Collection

By Adriano Sérgio

Adriano Sérgio
Acores Gold by Adriano Sérgio Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

A shining beacon of gold leaf applied in layers and covered in shellack. This Archtop-style guitar is again showing Adriano’s skills in the crafting of the carved body.

Key Specs:

  • Body: Red Cedar Braced Hand-carved Arch Top With Spanish Cedar Back
  • Neck: One-Piece Spanish Cedar With Dovetail Slide-in Set
  • Fingerboard: Ebony, 22 Jescar Evo Gold Medium Frets
  • Finish: 23K Gold Plated with Shellac
  • Tuners: Schertler
  • Pickups: Häussel Custom Mini Humbucker Pickup With Ebony Cover
  • Additional Features: Costum Adriano Sérgio Designed Floating Bridge With Vintage Bone Saddle, Custom Cover Jack Plates Made From Cymbal Brass

From Adriano Sérgio:

I was very much inspired by the look and feel of old baroque frames when I thought about using gold in the next collection. It has been a new and exciting challenge to try and move into another direction, so I have been using gold oil in the last guitars I made. What I find very appealing is that the colour will always be there, it won’t change over time.

Eternity Lost - The Gold Collection

By Ulrich Teuffel
Gold is Godlike. There is nothing else like gold since it has been discovered by humankind. It is so simple, but so difficult, so horribly difficult. So for me to take this step is really very meaningful.
Ulrich Tueffel
Eternity Lost by Ulrich Teuffel Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

Eternity Lost is a stunning example of Ulrich Teuffel's NIWA Prodigy guitar.

From Ulrich Teuffel:

My approach to the theme gold was to question our impression of the eternity and flawlessness of gold. So I didn't want to just cover the whole guitar with gold leaf and seal it with a translucent varnish. The guitar shows the counter play of perfection (the glossy fire-red neck) and imperfection (the roughly structured body and the antiqued metal parts). The gold on this guitar shows up as a signal, a message coming out of the centre of the body. It spreads its message over the body but the message is vanishing. The gold leaf is not protected and so it will vanish the more the guitar is being played. But it won't completely disappear: in the grooves and nests in the surface of the body the gold will withstand the wear. So there will remain some gleam of the message from the beginning.

Spalt Instruments

Spalt Instruments at NAMM 2022

From Spalt Instruments (Michael Spalt):

As much as I enjoy making a "traditional" instrument out of the finest "tonewoods", I also love making instruments which push the boundaries and open new possibilities to musicians willing to explore and expand the scope of their music. To me the prime quality of "tone" is not its more or less successful replication of some previous tonal fingerprint. It is the richness, definition, liveliness, transparency and balance present in the sound of the instrument. And even though each of my instruments has its own tonal identity, they all share these qualities and will offer them to the musician willing to listen.

Michael Spalt (Spalt Instruments Luthier) Left, Rob Vendrasco (Cosmo Music Guitar Specialist) Right

Rob Vendrasco spoke to Michael Spalt about two additional pieces featuring the theme of gold, "Pharao” and “Laurel” — these are adjacent parts to The Gold Collection “Auros”, featuring the same neck wood and construction method with the central aluminum plate connecting the parts and supporting the bridge.

Spalt Instruments Pharao

This is a very art deco type of design. The whole guitar is really two parts, and they are joined by this plate. The bridge rides on it, and the tailpiece locks into it. So it's a very solid construction and a very direct tonal response. When I work I try to make things work together, I approach it a little more like art.

Michael Spalt, Spalt Instruments
Michael Spalt Pharao Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

From Michael Spalt:

Pharao is reminiscent of Egyptian aesthetics, and their descendant, Art Deco. The ebony tailpiece holding the strings and all other elements, the ebony bridge support, pickup cover, fingerboard and headstock plate reflect the Art Deco styling. The body wings are mahogany.

Michael Spalt Pharao Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show
Michael Spalt Pharao Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

Spalt Instruments Laurel

We call this Caesar because it has the leaf motif, kind of like the Laurel crown the Caesars were wearing. You can see that it also repeats in the pickup carving and also in the headstock.

Michael Spalt, Spalt Instruments
Michael Spalt Laurel Guitar at the NAMM 2022 Show

From Michael Spalt:

Laurel sports a leaf motif, carried through on the aluminum piece, the pickup cover and the headstock plate, repeated in the inlay on the fingerboard. The Mahogany body is shaped like a Laurel ring, thus the association to Caesar headgear. Both nuts are shaped and carved matching the overall approach.

Ergon Guitars

Ergon Guitars at NAMM Show 2022

From Ergon Guitars (Adriano Sérgio):

The impetus to begin building guitars was sparked by the requests of close clients, who were searching for an instrument that embodied their preferences of tone and comfort of use. I believe the combination of all of my professional experience with a lifelong interest in art and design are inevitably reflected in the aesthetical aspect and ergonomic touch of Ergon guitars. The instruments are made to be a beautiful extension of the musicians body, as to grant a more fluid channel through which expression can be manifested. After all, I felt a passion for crafting since I remember seeing my father working with wood and metal as a hobby. When I was 5 or 6 years old, he gave me a set of woodworking tools, two of which still help me when I am creating the next instrument.

The National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) is the not-for-profit association with a mission to strengthen the $17 billion global music products industry. NAMM is comprised of approximately 10,400 members located in 104 countries and regions. NAMM events and members fund The NAMM Foundation's efforts to promote the pleasures and benefits of music, and advance active participation in music-making across the lifespan.
