A Quick Tour of the Taylor Guitars Factory
A Quick Look In The Back
The Taylor Guitar Factory in El Cajon, California is where the magic happens on many of Taylor's finest custom acoustic guitars. Watch Ryan McMullen take a quick tour and explain the process behind side bending, rosette shaping, laser cutting, and final assembly.
Hey everybody. Ryan McMullen here in the side bending department at the Taylor guitar factory. Now in this department we use machines that Taylor Guitars specifically manufacture to be able to bend the wood into the shape of each instrument. Each machine follows a different body shape and once the bend is completed, we'll add kerfing to those sides so that we can start to put the body together.
Different tone woods and acoustic guitars require different parameters of heating and pressure in order to bend the sides and create the shape of the acoustic instruments. Our side bending machines are uniquely programmed to understand the material that they are using to limit waste. Wasted material means that we lose time and also valuable resources.
Have you ever wondered how rosettes are made? Well our builders carefully inlay the rosettes and other additional material to make sure that it is properly done. Wood does not want to bend on its own so it's important that we properly and carefully bend the wood to fit into the rosette. A little bit of history for you - this heating pipe right here that we use to make rosettes is one of the original tools from our Lemon Grove factory. Bob Taylor brought it over from that factory and it's still in use today.
I'm currently standing in the laser room at the Taylor factory where wood is hand selected by our team to create guitars. Once it is selected, it goes into our laser cutting machines and very precisely cut to create the tops and backs of each instrument.
This is the last step for the guitars before they are sent to all of the stores. The guitars are meticulously assembled and inspected to make sure that playability meets our high standards.
