    The Problem; so many of us have home studios these days and forces us to set up in odd ways to get acoustic isolation and often we cannot see the musician in the other room. The dilemma comes about when that person does not have their headphones on and you keep pressing the talkback button and they do not respond so you have to get up and walk down the hallway to see what they are doing and why they are not responding.

    The question of how to mic a real rotating Leslie speaker like the Hammond organ sound on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon has engineers throwing in their opinions. I had the bounty of sitting in the control room with the legend engineer-producer Alan Parsons last week and he was preparing the mics for the Hammond B3 overdub with a Leslie 251 speaker. I had always thought to put 2 mics (quality condensors like Neumann KM84 or the good for anything Shure SM57) on opposite sides of the treble horn and one mic on the bottom rotor.     Man…. Recording sure has changed in the last five years or so!
    In the “old days” it was an expensive and somewhat gruelling adventure involving rooms with big speakers, floating floors and consoles as long as the eye could see.
