Peter Baartmans
About Peter Baartmans

Peter Baartmans started to play music at the age of five. From 1969, he studied piano and church-organ at the music school of Bergen op Zoom. In 1977, he continued these studies at the conservatory of Tillburg, the Netherlands. During this time, Peter started to play jazz in several jazz combos, was the pianist in a popular Big Band and played in various pop bands where he was the keyboard player for many well-known Dutch artists. In 1980, he participated in the Yamaha Electone Festival and won first prize in the national and European finals.

One year later, he started to work for Yamaha Musical Instruments in the Netherlands. In 1985, he started to do presentations and play concerts for Yamaha digital pianos and keyboards all over Europe. Since 1991, Peter performs presentations and concerts for Yamaha Corporation of Japan all over the world.

His great experience, unique style of presentation, the mixture of classical, jazz and pop, and the superb sound quality of Yamaha's latest digital instruments results in a unique and exceptional performance.

<![CDATA[The Piano. Revolutionized. The New Physis Series is the Next Step Up in Keyboard Tech]]> Tue, 22 Jul 2014 19:20:00 +0000 The Physis piano series has arrived in Canada, and it's the most powerful master keyboard controller available and the most powerful digital piano. It's leading edge technology but also ultimately musical and practical, and now it's exclusively available at Cosmo Music. Check out the Physis H1 Pro Piano and the K4EX & K5EX 88/76 note weighted master controllers.

Physis K4EX and K5EX

Are you looking for the ultimate keyboard as the centre piece for your studio or live rig? The new Physis K series master controllers offer many, many times the programability and control than the competition. The EX sound board preinstalled in the K4EX one adds state of the art piano, rhodes, wurlitzer, clav models and more, each with editing that far exceeds the competitors. And it still sells at a very competitive price. Playing is believing.

Here is an example of the power of just one Performance setting: one can split or layer 8 zones with 8 sliders, controlling the volume of each, which is pretty standard, but there are 3 more sets of 9 sliders & knobs! If one of the zones is a drawbar organ, they are now your physical hardware drawbar controls. The 3rd set of faders and knobs could be your analog synth editing controls and the 4th set of faders and knobs can control the volume of your DAW software. All this in one performance! 36 faders, 36 knobs, pitch bend wheel, 2 mod wheels, and aftertouch. On the back panel there are 8 5-pin MIDI outputs, so you can directly plug it in to 8 other synths. Plus, there's 4 to device and 1 USB to host connection and 2 5-pin MIDI inputs to patch other MIDI devices, wind, pad controllers, and more. Powerful.

I take a closer look at the wide range of sounds on the K5EX below:

Physis H1

I had a most pleasant surprise at the NAMM Show in California this past January the with the Physis Pro keyboard line, which has now arrived in Canada exclusively at Cosmo Music. As a gigging and recording player, we all want the most playable expressive piano sounds: Rhodes, Wurli 200's and more. We want the ability to edit every parameter to make it your own but also come out of the box with sounds that are simply just right. We also want to control any other synth keyboard, module or computer with ease.

I take a look at a wider range of sounds found in the H1 below:

<![CDATA[REVIEWED: "Roland RD-64"]]> Thu, 11 Jul 2013 16:41:13 +0000 Roland is a well known company for its innovative contribution to the electronic musical instrument industry. They do it again with the introduction of the RD-64 digital piano, a compact 64 weighted keys keyboard that can be the answer to many musicians.

As much as we like to have an authentic feel and quality piano sound when gigging or on the go, carrying large and heavy 88-key keyboards becomes tiring not to mention it’s hard if not impossible to fit one on the back seat of a regular car.

Powered by the famous Roland Super Natural Piano sound engine, RD-64 provides a great acoustic piano sound paired with an authentic weighted-action and ivory feel piano keyboard. But there is more to the RD-64 than meets the eye. There are “bread and butter” sounds included such as electric pianos, clavinets and organs with rotary emulation, and the RD-64 makes a great MIDI controller with a pitch bend/modulation lever and D-beam, when paired with the Roland Integra 7 sound module or in a computer-based home studio.

With a small footprint, compact and portable, RD-64 is the perfect digital piano for music educators in music labs, group piano lessons, live playing or studio work and musicians on the go.

<![CDATA[Featured Instruments from Korg and Roland]]> Wed, 19 Jun 2013 11:02:22 +0000

Korg SV1 pro stage piano

This piano has a distinctive quality look and presence onstage and plays to that high standard. The feel of the top of the line RH3 weighted key bed is solid, heavier than spring weighted but easy to articulate fast repeated notes. The simplicity in having a real knob, to grab and adjust any setting makes the in studio or on stage changes easy and fast with great results. All the core keyboard vintage sounds are included, acoustic and electric pianos, clav’s and organs. You can also add in the real preamp tube to warm up your tone. Available in both 88 and 73 key versions. The 73 key is a favorite in providing a great sounding vintage keyboard that fits into the back seat of a compact car.

Korg M3 61 note synth and Korg M3M module

Korg M3 61 note synth

Korg M3M module

Why do so many pro keyboardists, including myself keep their Korg M3 synth’s while owning newer pro workstations? The keyboard feels great, synth weight with aftertouch but firm, with trigger pads of the finest feel and touch. The screen is a large touch screen that can turn into a KaosPad-like assignable touch filter, vector assignment etc.

One unique benefit is the module of sounds is removable so you can fly with all your pro synth and PCM sounds always. Onstage look is amazing, white with wood trim, lots of red led lights, cool white pitch/mod joystick. It also can be used as a superb feeling master controller, split or layer internal or external sounds up to 16 ways per combination and 100’s of user Combinations storable within the M3 or M3 module.

The Korg M3-61 synth or the M3M module. Get them still new before they are gone.

Roland FR2 digital accordion

Being an accordionist originally before moving on to piano and keyboards, gives a huge hiring benefit on many gigs. Accordion is very fashionable be it Springsteen or Sudanese jazz. The issue for live work is typically they are outdoor festivals or in less pleasant bars where I would prefer not to take my handmade $ 10,000 Italian accordion. The Roland V-accordion series provides an accordion, rather in the case of the FR2, 10 different accordions with no issue of reeds going out of tune and less than half the weight on your shoulders. The bellows work the same for expression. One can choose if you want a French Musette or a German or an Italian accordion and then which of 10 treble and 5 bass registers of the sound you prefer. At 10% of the cost of a collection of these accordions and all the added functionality, the FR2 is great value. In my multi-keyboard rig, I have placed the FR2 on its side on an amp stand (Ultimate Support Amp-150 ) and the FR2 has served as an additional velocity sensitive MIDI controller for a VSTi loaded Macbook Pro or any other MIDI device to use on every song in the set.
