I decided to start at the beginning and to pick my favourite example of the first commercially viable solid-body electric guitar; the Fender Custom Shop Limited Run Road Show Telecaster, Master Built by Dale Wilson.

The Fender Custom Shop is known for putting out amazing guitars, and the pinnacle of this is their Master Built line. These instruments are made by an individual builder, rather than by a team of builders, and that individual attention makes all the difference.

The colour is the first thing you notice about this guitar. Although it’s not for everyone, Fiesta Red really catches the eye. The nicely weighted pine body is double-bound, which makes for a very classy yet understated look, and the aging on the body makes it look like a well-played workhorse.

Turning the guitar over, you can see the absolutely stunning flame maple neck. The neck shape is a very comfortable Oval C profile, which fits the hand like an old friend. The dark rosewood fretboard has a 9.5” radius and clay dot inlays.

Plugging this guitar in is when you really get into trouble. The Twisted Tele pickups give you nice chimey cleans in the neck position, a great twangy bridge tone, and that perfect rhythm tone in the middle position which only a tele can give you. Turn up the gain, and you’re rewarded with a beautifully ugly growl that’s both thick and clear sounding.

As many nice guitars as we get to see here at Cosmo, this Tele is easily in my top5. For sound, looks, and playability, this one’s pretty tough to beat. That’s why it’s my first pick for Guitar of the Week.
