This unquestionably classic DVD showcases one of the greatest drummers to pick up the sticks. The DVD shows Jeff at the top of his game, teaching every drummer (no matter how good you are!) how to play. Besides all of the different grooves he demonstrates, this DVD is worth getting simply because he exhibits his flawless technique and mind blowing groove when he teaches the drumming classic Rosanna shuffle.
Todd Sucherman: Methods and Mechanics
Todd really shows his stuff on his instructional DVD, everything from bop to rock. He shows you why practicing rudiments pays off, why listening to the rest of the band is the best way to play, and how to put all you’re practicing to good use!
The songs he plays are unforgettable and musical to no end and I personally can't stop listening to Tears of Joy (masterfully played in 13/8). He spends ample time on rudiments and the practice pad, and I love the way he translates his thoughts so anyone can understand what he's saying.
Jojo Mayer: Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer
Jojo's guru like understanding of technique makes this video a must have for every drummer! I have met many drummers who because of different wrist and hand injuries could no longer play until this DVD hit the rack. He teaches pretty much every technique the world of drums has to offer with a slow motion break down of...well the motions. His playing on his solos and short breaks are beautiful and musical and perfectly shows the marriage of technique and groove.
Benny Greb: Language of Drumming
As one of the most musical drummers in the world today, Greb has a great understanding of complexities of the basics. This DVD is all about speaking through drums, thinking of music as a language and not just a beat. He conveys the concept of "speaking" to your band mates (and more importantly) your audience when you play. Making sure at all times you're never overshadowing what’s going on while still expressing yourself, which is after all the ideal musician!
Aaron Spears: Beyond the Chops
Known for his blazing licks and unbelievable creativity this DVD Beyond the Chops is exactly that. I've been an Aaron fan for years and seeing this DVD showed me a whole different side of him.
Playing a song from the major genre’s out there today, he shows how you can play a song and make people want to move and dance (which is our job as drummers) while still educating about the history and techniques he uses. My personal favorite song is “I Love You” (an old school soul tune all about the groove and song) Aaron masterfully shows us why he's getting some of the biggest gigs out there today.
