What's the Difference Between Levels of Horns?

Posted on April 26, 2011 by Lesley Dawe

A frequently asked question I often get while working here in the band department is “What is the difference between an instrument that is a ‘Student Model’ and one that is a ‘Professional Model’?” To answer simply, the main difference between these models can be attributed to two things:
1) The materials used to construct the instrument.
2) The quality of sound production the instrument gives.

Student models are constructed to be durable, reliable, and to allow for optimum sound production almost immediately. They are produced primarily with the needs of beginning students in mind, and are designed for ease of use. On the flip side, professional horns often require a more highly developed skill set (in terms of your embouchure, and also in the use of your breath) in order to produce a desirable tone. Furthermore, the materials and craftsmanship used in a professional model reflect an extensive time honed process, with the end result being a product that is of a higher quality, ultimately making it more desirable among intermediate and professional musicians.

I often recommend student models for amateur musicians who are looking to play simply for enjoyment, for students who only plan to take music while in a school-setting, and for those looking to get started playing again after a prolonged absence from their instrument. For individuals who are looking to continue their musical studies at the post-secondary level, or who are involved with pro, or semi-pro ensembles, I would strongly recommend an intermediate or professional model. It’s important to remember though, that after a certain period of time with your student horn you will eventually outgrow it, and will need to make the investment in the next step up. Here at Cosmo Music, we have plenty of options available for brass, string, and woodwind instruments, for players at all levels, so if you’re in the market for a new instrument, or are simply looking to try out something different, you should stop in to the Band Department and give our horns a try!

Happy Playing!
