Now usually the Zidjian booth is near…..so what does the oldest cymbal company in the world have to offer? Something vintage or retro inspired perhaps? Sounds that are centuries old? NOT AT ALL! In fact I believe what Zildjian had to offer was quite the game changer in the world of electronic percussion. Yes, I said “electronic”! Zildjian launched their Gen 16 AE Cymbals. These aren’t the rubber pads you’re used to on current electronic set. These are actual metal cymbals with all the look, movement, and playability of real cymbals because….they ARE [...] Read more

Keyboards & Software from NAMM 2011
Posted on January 31, 2011 by Fred Nicholson
Just back from NAMM and the big keyboard/recording news was from Korg - it’s the very cool all-in-one workstation called the Korg Kronos! It's available in synth touch 61 with fully weighted graded hammer 73 and 88.
I attended the 30 min demo from both good friend Steve McNally and specialist Rich and it sounds awesome! It can do everything including 16 tracks of midi recording with 9 different synth engines including both analog and digital sources.
16 tracks of live audio all in the same instrument without the need of a computer. If you want to burn a cd you can [...] Read more

JBL’s EON 210P
“All in one” portable PA systems have been selling like crazy for us over the past few years and I always hoped JBL would offer something to compete in this market. The time has finally come as they introduce the new EON 210P.
The EON210P consists of two 10-inch, two-way, powered loudspeakers, one with a detachable powered mixer and the other with a detachable storage compartment, one pair of unshielded speaker cables and a power cord. Capable of reproducing full bandwidth sound at high levels the 210P is comprised of a 10-inch woofer, a 1.5-inch neodymium high [...] Read more

The Art of Rasgueado
Posted on January 31, 2011 by Elliott Chung
Classical guitarists, have you ever wanted to introduce rasgueado’s into your playing? The Art of Rasgueado by Ioannis Anastassakis is a recent addition to our store collection and contains a comprehensive analysis of this special technique for both the classical and flamenco guitar. The author goes to great lengths to describe how the rasgueado, or finger strum, can be performed using different finger combinations. In addition, he also includes a chapter on the golpe technique, which involves hitting different parts of the right hand on the body of the guitar to produce a percussive sound. This is the first book [...] Read more

NAMM 2011 - WOW!
Posted on January 31, 2011 by Al Carter
My first-ever trip to NAMM was incredible! What a great opportunity to get a new and thorough overview of what is going on in the world of music retail. It's a much larger world out there than most of us might think! To meet and speak to retailers from all around the world was incredibly eye-opening and I really learned a lot about the challenges and trends we share universally.
New product? Oh there definitely were a few items I'd like to bring into the Band and Orchestra Department here at Cosmo! Yamaha, especially, blew me away with some of the [...] Read more

Exciting New Piano Technologies at NAMM
Posted on January 31, 2011 by Cosmo Music
Once again it was a piano-centric hot product show with Roland and Yamaha featuring new technologies of pianos.
The new Yamaha N1 Avant Grand hybrid piano boasts the same technology as the larger Avant Grand models with a just slightly reduced sound system and cabinetry but the same C-Series real grand action less TRS vibration technology for a much lower street price to moreless be the top-of-the-line priced Clavinova CLP. A winner for pianists !!
We had a private showing of the new Roland V-Grand piano. Like all V-products from Roland, care is taken to study the nature of the sound from [...] Read more

My Trip to NAMM 2011 - Drums Part 4
Posted on January 30, 2011 by Cosmo Music
Never to sit on their laurels, you can always be sure of evolution from Pearl Drums. Last year was the launch of their entry into the word of electronic drums with the E-Pro Live, and this year they made quite the splash by attaching The Throne Thumper to the stool I was demoing the kit with. The “Thumper” is a 200 watt power amp that shakes your throne when you play the kick…and boy DOES it ever kick. It really makes you feel a part of the experience. This can be used for acoustic kits for when [...] Read more

My Trip to NAMM 2011 - Drums Part 3
Posted on January 29, 2011 by Cosmo Music
The next day we started bright and early at the Roland booth, which was actually not a booth at all, but rather the entire arena attached to the convention center. Thank you for the muffins and orange juice! So how does a market leader make its best selling kit better? The new TD9 is an all-mesh kit, with a redesigned foam kick trigger for increased realistic feel, upgraded cymbals to include a moving hi hat, a larger ride cymbal, and many new kit sounds bringing the module total to 99 kits! Wow…a lot of fun to play [...] Read more

My Trip to NAMM 2011 - Drums Part 2
Posted on January 28, 2011 by Cosmo Music
Right next door to the Sonor Booth was Sabian... who do I see walking around smashing the “snot” out of his new signature cymbal, was none other than my idol Chad Smith!(I have the picture to prove it.) Dubbed the “Holy China”, this cymbal quite possibly might be the loudest china available today. It is available in 19” and 21” versions with over 40 holes punched out of it. My ears are STILL ringing (warning to all our young drummers reading this: WEAR HEARING PROTECTION ALWAYS!).
Also in attendance was Jo Jo Mayer who was showing off [...] Read more
