  • Fabulous horns...

Posted on February 25, 2010 by Cosmo Music

Here’s one for all you vintage horn fans out there: a Conn New Wonder alto sax from the 1920s has appeared in our department (microtuner and all). It seems to have been re-lacquered at some point in its life but it’s still a beauty. To top it all off, this little sax is pitched in ‘low pitch’ which means it plays in tune with modern day instruments.
For those of you who like something more modern we have a Yanagisawa 991 on display as well. It is in excellent condition and would be great for anyone hunting for a pro horn [...]  Read more

  • Cavatina – Highlights from the World’s Greatest Guitar Collection

Posted on February 24, 2010 by Elliott Chung

One very important aspect to learning to play an instrument is to listen to other great musicians in order to get a sense of what proper tone, technique and musical interpretation sound like. Here at Cosmo we have a wonderful classical guitar recording entitled “Cavatina – Highlights from the World’s Greatest Guitar Collection.”
This outstanding CD, distributed by Naxos records, contains some of the finest pieces ever composed for the classical guitar. Selections include: Cavatina (Myers), Danza Espanola No. 5 (Granados), Prelude No. 1 (Villa-Lobos), Sevilla (Albeniz), Recuerdos de la Alhambra (Tarrega) and Dance of the Miller (de Falla). • Pick of the Week: Suhr Modern with a Beautiful Aqua Blue Burst

Posted on February 22, 2010 by Cosmo Music

We just received a Suhr Modern with a beautiful Aqua Blue Burst top. This was built for the 2010 NAMM show and has one of the most incredible tops that I have ever seen!

The guitar itself also plays really well and sounds great. It features a maple top with mahogany body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard. Frets on this guitar are Pleked making it feel smooth and comfortable. All around this guitar is amazing and definitely worth while checking out.

  • Doug's Jazz Blog

Posted on February 19, 2010 by Doug Armstrong

As a jazz musician it is important to regularly work on developing your own sound and style. You also need to expand your repertoire and learn new tunes. There often isn't enough time in a practice session to do all 3.
I recommend Hal Leonard's Jazz Play Along series. With over 100 volumes there's something for every aspiring jazz musician whether you play a treble or bass clef instrument. Each book comes with an accompanying CD with a fabulous rhythm section as well as solid trumpet and saxophone players who demonstrate the melodies for you.
The series features jazz greats such as [...]  Read more

  • M-Audio Axiom Pro 49

Posted on February 10, 2010 by Cosmo Music

So this week I was lucky enough to have a chance to test drive M-Audio's Axiom Pro series and since I am a current owner of the Axiom classic I was excited to see how the new features stood up. First program I was eager to try it with was Propellerhead's Reason 4.0 software (one of my personal favorites).
After creating a new project and setting up the HyperControl Template to Reason I started up a new Progressive Trance project. Upon selecting the 16:2 Mixer the Axiom began displaying information on the mixer from it's display screen. I could see what [...]  Read more

Classical guitar players! Our sheet music collection continues to grow and we’ve just added a great new book to our classical guitar family. Ricardo Iznaola’s On Practicing is a must have for any serious guitarist and answers some of the most commonly asked questions about how to practice effectively, addressing topics like time-management, sight-reading, memorization and goal-setting.
Here’s an excerpt from the book on inner poise:
The foundation of good practice is the attainment and maintenance of inner poise. Inner poise can be defined as a mental/spiritual state of alertness and readiness for intellectual activity, without emotional tension. It is characterized by [...]  Read more
